LOCATION

One of the initial attractions of Benidorm was its location, on the Mediterranean coast, opposite a beautiful bay which is split into two by the rocky tip of the old castle and facing south. All the other sides were protected from the dominating winds of Levante or from the cold Northern winds of Levante or from the cold Northern winds by mountain ranges, so the microclimate, especially in Spring, Winter or Autumn, is very mild, with considerably higher temperatures than along the rest of the coast. The sea water is also warm enough to bathe all year round.
Benidorm enjoys a special micro-climate all year round due to the position of the mountains which surround it.

Benidorm enjoys 3,400 hours of sunshine a year. The average annual temperature on the coast is 18ºC with an average midday temperature of 15ºC in winter and of 26ºC in summer. Benidorm´s temperature can reach 29ºC in the sun but there are pleasant breezes and in the shade it is much lower. In winter its average temperature is 15ºC.There are no abrupt changes in temperature.Between the months of December and March the temperature of the sea water is around 15ºC.As a publicity slogan used to say “La brisa pasa el verano en Benidorm, y el sol el invierno” (The breeze spends the summer in Benidorm and the sun spends the winter). The average relative humidity is 65%.Pure air, some of it from the Sahara, is humidified as it crosses the Mediterranean and the mass of water warms it in winter and cools it in summer.Air pollution is practically non-existent.
Its warm, invigorating climate in winter has become one of Benidorm´s greatest assets and attracts large numbers of long term visitors from the north of Spain and Northern Europe. It is the perfect climate for winter visitors who can spend all day in the open air and the sunshine. According to Mario Gaviria, sociologist and ecologist,it would be more sensible to give an analysis of average temperatures during the daytime when these visitors are out-of-doors rather than average temperatures for winter (which include the lowest temperatures during the night when they are asleep) and these would give a figure of about 17ºC which would be the real winter temperature as far as these tourists are concerned. There are very few resorts on the western Mediterranean where this temperature is reached in winter.
